Each year, at the NAMM Show, Taylor Guitars assembles its most esteemed dealers at a renowned restaurant called "The Catch." There, they unveil a selection of exceptionally rare guitars, crafted in extremely limited quantities. The instrument we are showcasing today stands as a true testament to Taylor Guitars' unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail.
In terms of comfort and playability, there's hardly a full-sized guitar that can rival the Taylor GS 12 Fret. Taylor takes a unique approach when crafting 12-fret guitars; the entire construction changes dramatically from the more common 14-fret models. The placement of the bridge and bracing undergo significant alterations, resulting in enhanced bass response and effortless playability. Just a gentle stroke of the strings on these guitars produces a mesmerising tone, thanks to a combination of factors like the top's size and thickness, the bracing, and the bridge placement. Taylor affectionately refers to these guitars as secret weapons.
Now, let's talk about this specific model, Catch #15. It's crafted from Hawaiian KOA, boasting mesmerising depth and flame patterns in the wood grain, as evident in the photos. Only four of these exceptional guitars were ever produced, following the "rule of The Catch" - a strict tradition at Taylor where they limit production to a specific quantity for the show and refrain from making any more. This represents a unique opportunity to acquire an extraordinary instrument that will undoubtedly become a cherished family heirloom, passed down to future generations.
While specifications alone cannot truly convey the character of this guitar, here are some key details:
- The top is made from torrefied Sitka spruce, exhibiting remarkable grain patterns. Torrefaction involves a baking process that renders the top wood more stable, creating a tonal character reminiscent of a well-aged instrument.
- The cocobolo armrest is beveled for both playing comfort and to prevent any hindrance to the soundboard's movement.
- The back and sides are constructed from AA-grade KOA, selected for its stunning grain depth and flame. The bookmatching on this particular instrument is impeccably done, enhancing the wood's visual appeal.
- Cocobolo binding accentuates the KOA wood beautifully, and the body edges are chamfered for an ergonomic playing experience.
- As with most Taylor Guitars, the fretboard and bridge are made from West African Ebony, prized for its hardness that ensures excellent fret stability and a smooth feel under the fingers.
- The peghead features Taylor's standard paddle headstock design, equipped with Gotoh 510 Antique Gold 21:1 tuners for outstanding tuning stability.
- The rosette is a single ring bound sound hole, not only protecting the guitar against aggressive strumming but also showcasing a striking faceted B/W/B MOP frame with Cocobolo accents.
Lastly, it's worth noting that this guitar features Taylor's V-Class bracing design, a groundbreaking innovation that has transformed the world of acoustic guitars. With improved sustain and impeccable intonation, this design has ushered in the most significant change in the guitar industry in over a century.
