The Synergy SYN-20IR is a 20-watt, all-valve, three-channel amplifier head that utilises a modular preamp system. This system allows users to swap preamp modules, each containing the circuitry of a different classic amplifier, significantly expanding the amp's tonal range. The SYN-20IR comes with a built-in vintage American-style clean channel and can house two additional channels from any Synergy preamp module. Each module features two 12AX7 preamp tubes and is designed to accurately replicate the tone of the amplifier it emulates. Synergy collaborates with various amp brands to ensure the modules provide authentic sounds and often include additional features not found on the original amplifiers.
The amp's 20-watt power section, driven by EL84 tubes, makes it suitable for various settings, from home practice to live performances. It features onboard impulse response (IR) technology with less than 1ms of latency, allowing for realistic cabinet simulation for direct recording or performance without a cabinet. The SYN-20IR also offers selectable Power Amp Structure, providing three different power amp configurations and feedback options that can be assigned to each channel. The Structure feature significantly alters the overall feel and sound of the amp. Additionally, a Reactance control, similar to a presence knob but with a dynamic response, allows for further tone shaping.
The SYN-20IR's versatility is further enhanced by its MIDI capabilities. The included 3-button MIDI footswitch allows users to save and recall combinations of channels, amp structures, and IRs. External MIDI devices can be connected for access to up to 128 user presets. The Synergy Editor software, accessible via USB, allows users to manage IRs, configure amp and module channels, and fine-tune power amp simulation.
The amp also features a silent playing mode, an XLR DI output, a headphone output with dedicated volume control, and a universal voltage selector for international use. It includes a series FX loop, multiple speaker output options, and a limited 5-year warranty. Its compact size and lightweight construction make it easily portable.
