The Synergy Friedman BE-DLX Preamp Module offers guitarists the acclaimed tones of Friedman's BE and HBE all-tube preamps in a single, versatile unit. These circuits are highly regarded within the amplifier industry, establishing a benchmark for modern, British-voiced amp heads. Friedman amplifiers, designed by Dave Friedman, are celebrated for their ability to deliver both contemporary high-gain sounds and classic rock tones, making them a sought-after brand amongst guitarists.
The BE-DLX module uniquely combines both the BE and HBE voices, previously available as separate Synergy modules, into one convenient package. This integration provides guitarists with expanded sonic possibilities and greater control over their sound.
This dual-channel, all-tube module, designed by Dave Friedman, meticulously recreates the architecture of the original BE tube preamp in both channels. Each channel features its own independent set of controls, including volume, gain, and a three-band equaliser. This allows for precise tonal shaping and the ability to set up distinct sounds for each channel. Furthermore, each channel is equipped with a BE/HBE mini toggle switch, enabling users to transition seamlessly between a responsive, bluesy crunch and the high-gain tones favoured by many contemporary rock and metal musicians. This functionality allows for versatile setups, such as dedicating one channel to a vintage rock crunch and the other to a modern metal sound, or using one for rhythm playing and the other for a boosted lead tone.
The BE-DLX module incorporates two circuit board mounted switches that further enhance its flexibility. A two-position FAT switch provides the option to increase the overall low-end response of the module, adding depth and thickness to the sound. Additionally, a Gain Structure switch allows users to reduce the module's gain, facilitating the creation of classic vintage tones with a less aggressive character.
The Synergy BE-DLX module effectively delivers the sonic characteristics of two iconic Friedman amplifiers in a single, compact, all-tube, and highly practical format. This eliminates the need for multiple preamp modules or amplifiers, streamlining a guitarist's rig and offering a wide range of tones in one unit.
A notable feature of the Friedman BE-DLX module is its patented three-position Cathode Select function, accessible via a switch on the PCB. This innovative feature allows users to configure the input tube bass response to emulate the original circuit design of various modules. This adjustment directly influences the feel and tightness of the sound. Synergy has identified the three most prevalent input tube circuit configurations and made them accessible through this switch. Position 1 (1.5K resistor and 22uf capacitor) is typical of USA-voiced modules, position 2 (2.7K resistor and .68uf capacitor) is characteristic of British-style modules, and position 3 (1.8K resistor and 1uf capacitor) is representative of SOLDANO / VAI modules. While the BE-DLX is set to the British-style position 2 by default, users are encouraged to experiment with all three settings to discover their preferred tonal characteristics and response.
