The Synergy BOGNER UBERSCHALL preamp module offers guitarists the renowned high-gain tones of the Bogner Überschall amplifier in a modular format. The original Überschall amplifier is well-regarded for its ability to produce substantial all-tube distortion while maintaining string clarity, making it a popular choice for a diverse range of musicians. Its second channel, often described as responsive and powerful, is particularly favoured by those seeking high-gain sounds. This channel delivers both strong crunch and extended low-end response, making it suitable for players using extended-range and drop-tuned guitars, as exemplified by artists in bands such as Korn, Tool, Slipknot, and Rammstein.
Synergy recognised the demand for these classic metal tones in their modular system and collaborated with Reinhold Bogner to recreate the Überschall in module form. Integrating the Synergy Überschall preamp module into a compatible Synergy rig provides users with the same aggressive tones and responsive feel as the original amplifier. Furthermore, Reinhold Bogner has included Pre-EQ, Boost, and Cut mini toggles on the module, offering additional options for shaping the desired sound.
Synergy's partnership with respected amplifier designers like Reinhold Bogner allows them to provide sought-after all-tube tones that cater to the requirements of modern guitarists, including direct recording, lower stage volumes, and compact rig setups. The Synergy preamp module system has gained significant traction within the industry due to its ability to deliver authentic amplifier sounds in a flexible format.
The Bogner Überschall Preamp Module features an all-tube design, custom-engineered by Reinhold Bogner and the Synergy team. It offers two channels, enabling users to switch between Overdrive and Distortion tones. The Blue Channel, labelled Überschall Twin Jet, includes controls for Gain, Volume, a three-band EQ, and Pre EQ & Cut switches. The Red Channel, Überschall Super High Gain, features Gain, Volume, a three-band EQ, and Pre EQ & Boost switches. The module utilises two 12AX7 preamp tubes, contributing to its rich harmonic performance.
Installation and removal from Synergy preamp docks is designed to be straightforward. A Dual/Single switch enhances the module's versatility by allowing it to be used with older single-channel Egnater and Randall hardware, although channel switching will not be possible in these older systems. Additionally, a three-position cathode select switch allows users to configure the input tube bias setting, influencing input gain and bass response. This switch offers three settings that emulate popular input tube circuit configurations found in USA, British, and Soldano/Vai voiced amplifiers, with the module being preset to the designer's preferred setting for the Überschall, which is position 1 (1.5K resistor and 22uf capacitor). Experimentation with these settings is encouraged to find the preferred tonal characteristics.
The Dual/Single slide switch further expands compatibility. When set to Dual, the module operates as intended in Synergy units with dual-channel switching capabilities. When used with older single-channel amps or preamps, setting the switch to Single will activate the top channel of the module, while setting it to Dual in this context will activate the bottom channel. This ensures that users with older hardware can still access the tones of either channel on the module.
