Description

The Synergy ENGL POWERBALL Preamp Module offers guitarists access to the acclaimed high-gain tones of the Engl Powerball amplifier in a convenient, all-tube module format. Engl has established a strong reputation for producing precise and powerful amplifiers, particularly within the metal and hard rock genres. The Powerball head itself built upon this legacy by providing not only the thick punch and crunch synonymous with the brand but also a wide range of inspiring tones across the entire gain spectrum, making it a versatile choice for metal players seeking diverse sonic possibilities.

Recognising the demand for these sought-after tones in modern guitar rigs, Synergy Amps collaborated with Horst Langer, the original designer of the Engl Powerball head. The resulting Synergy Powerball module encapsulates two of the Powerball's four channels within a single, all-tube preamp unit. Despite its compact size, the module provides a comprehensive level of control, allowing it to effectively replicate the sonic capabilities of its namesake amplifier head.

Each of the module's two channels features the standard complement of a three-band EQ, gain control, and volume control. Additionally, each channel is equipped with two switches: a Gain Lo/Hi switch and a Mid Boost switch. These supplementary controls significantly expand the tonal palette available to the player, providing access to a wide array of German-engineered amplifier tones. The module utilises two 12AX7 preamp tubes, which contribute to its rich harmonic performance and authentic tube amplifier sound.

The Synergy preamp module system is designed to meet the needs of contemporary guitarists, offering a solution for direct recording, lower stage volume requirements, and the construction of compact guitar rigs. The Powerball module is easily installed and removed from Synergy preamp docks, offering flexibility and convenience for players who utilise the Synergy modular system.

Furthermore, the Powerball module incorporates features that enhance its compatibility with a wider range of hardware. A Dual/Single switch allows the module to be used not only with current Synergy units but also with older single-channel Egnater and Randall modular amplifiers and preamps. When used with these older units, the switch enables the selection of either of the module's two channels. While channel switching is not possible due to the limitations of the older hardware, this feature provides access to the module's tones within existing setups.

Another notable feature is a three-position cathode select switch located on the module's PCB. This switch allows users to configure the input tube bias setting, thereby influencing the input gain and bass response of the module. This feature essentially allows players to emulate the specific input tube circuit designs favoured by different amplifier designers. The switch offers three settings, corresponding to typical voicings found in USA-style amplifiers, British-style amplifiers, and the Powerball (which shares this setting with Soldano and Vai modules). While the module ships with the designer's preferred setting engaged, players are encouraged to experiment with the different positions to find their preferred feel and tonal characteristics.
