The Synergy Dr.Z Z Wreck Preamp Module brings the acclaimed sonic characteristics of the Dr. Z Z Wreck amplifier into the versatile Synergy modular system. The original Z Wreck amplifier, a collaborative effort between Brad Paisley, Dr. Z (Mike Zaite), and the late Ken Fischer of Trainwreck fame, gained recognition for its responsive feel and wide-ranging tonal capabilities. This vintage-inspired tube amplifier is known for its ability to produce both articulate clean tones and overdriven sounds with a distinctive bloom and vocal-like quality.
Developed in partnership with Dr. Z, the Synergy Z Wreck preamp module faithfully recreates the essence of this celebrated amplifier. Notably, this module incorporates an integrated, zero-watt power amplifier, complete with a phase inverter and its own transformer. This innovative design is a first for Synergy modules and is crucial to capturing the unique tonal signature of the Z Wreck amplifier, which derives a significant portion of its character from its power amp section.
A key feature of the original Z Wreck amplifier, and now the Synergy module, is the inclusion of "Speed" and "Comfort" settings. These settings, born from the preferences of Mike Zaite and Ken Fischer during the amplifier's design, offer distinct tonal responses. The "Speed" setting, Mike Zaite's preference, utilises a higher power transformer voltage (330V) to deliver a percussive attack and enhanced note articulation. In contrast, Ken Fischer's "Comfort" setting employs a slightly lower transformer voltage (300V), resulting in an initial attack followed by a subtle swell, providing a smoother, more vintage-style drive. The Synergy module accurately reproduces this Comfort/Speed switch, allowing users to access these distinct sonic flavours.
The integration of an on-board phase inverter and transformer within the Synergy module represents a significant engineering achievement. Unlike typical guitar amplifiers where the majority of the tone originates from the preamp, the Z Wreck's power amp contributes substantially to its signature sound. To overcome this challenge in a modular format, Synergy developed a "zero-watt power amp" within the module itself. This innovative solution ensures that the harmonic richness and dynamic response of the Z Wreck power amp, including the functionality of the "Cut" knob (which is part of the power amp circuit), are authentically captured. This breakthrough expands the tonal possibilities and flexibility of the entire Synergy ecosystem.
The Synergy Z Wreck module features a dual-channel design, with both channels mirroring the musical characteristics of the original amplifier. This allows for seamless switching between pristine clean tones and thick, overdriven sounds. Each channel offers independent Volume, Bass, and Treble controls, enabling precise tailoring of rhythm and lead tones. Additionally, the module incorporates Cut knobs for fine-tuning the high-end frequencies and independent Master volume controls for balancing the output levels of each channel.
Staying true to the original Z Wreck amplifier, the Synergy module utilises dual Tung Sol 12AX7 preamp tubes. These tubes are specifically chosen for their ability to produce the characteristic upper-midrange clarity and brilliance that defines the Z Wreck's distinct "VOX"-like tone. Dr. Z's commitment to this specific tube type ensures that the module delivers the authentic sonic character of the amplifier.
Furthermore, the Z Wreck module includes a three-position Cathode Select switch on the circuit board. This feature allows users to adjust the input tube bass response to emulate the original circuit configurations of various amplifier designs. These settings influence the overall feel and tightness of the module's response. The switch offers three popular configurations, typically associated with USA-voiced amplifiers, British-style amplifiers, and modules like the SOLDANO and VAI. While the module is preset to the Z Wreck's preferred setting, users are encouraged to experiment with the different positions to discover their preferred tonal characteristics.
