The Synergy DRECT preamp module is a two-channel, all-tube unit designed to replicate the sound and characteristics of renowned rectified amplifiers that have significantly influenced heavy rock music for over three decades. The emergence of the 100-watt, two-channel dual rectified amplifier in 1992 marked a turning point, establishing a new standard for heavy rock tones. Its distinctive low-mid frequency punch and high-gain capabilities quickly became the foundational sound for numerous bands seeking to amplify their down-tuned and aggressive musical styles. While the original amplifier underwent several revisions, the "Rev C" version is particularly notable as the configuration that first introduced this iconic sound to the wider music world. The Orange channel of this revision offered a powerful crunch, while the Red channel delivered a searing high-gain tone that defined the sound of rock and metal guitar for a generation, and its impact continues to be felt today.
The Synergy DRECT module is engineered to meticulously capture the characteristics of this influential Rev C amplifier. It faithfully reproduces the substantial low-end and clear articulation that has been a hallmark of countless hard rock and metal recordings. Furthermore, this module offers enhanced versatility compared to the original amplifier design by allowing users to independently configure each of its two channels as either the Orange or the Red voice. For musicians aiming to achieve the powerful and defining tones associated with bands such as Metallica, 311, Linkin Park, Korn, and Soundgarden, amongst many others, the Synergy DRECT preamp module provides a direct pathway to that celebrated rectified sound.
A notable feature of the DRECT module is its integrated three-position Cathode Select Switch located on the printed circuit board. This switch enables users to adjust the input tube bass response of the module to closely match the original circuit design of various amplifiers. This adjustment directly influences the overall feel and tightness of the sound. Different amplifier designers employ specific combinations of electronic components within their input tube circuits to achieve their unique sonic characteristics. Synergy has identified the three most commonly used combinations and made them accessible via this switch. Typically, amplifiers with a USA voicing utilise setting 1 (featuring a 1.5K resistor and a 22uf capacitor). British-style amplifiers commonly use position 2 (with a 2.7K resistor and a 0.68uf capacitor), while modules designed to emulate amplifiers like the SOLDANO and VAI models are set to position 3. Importantly, users are encouraged to experiment with all three positions to discover their personal preference and the tonal nuances each setting offers. The DRECT module will be shipped with the Cathode Select Switch preset to position 3 (using a 1.8K resistor and a 1uf capacitor), which is the preferred setting for this particular module.
The DRECT module also incorporates a secondary Dual<>Single slide switch, which expands its compatibility. This switch allows the newer Synergy modules to be used with older single-channel modular amplifiers and preamps from Egnater and Randall that were not originally designed to accommodate dual-channel modules. When set to either "Dual" or "Single", this switch allows access to one of the module's two channels when the corresponding slot on the older hardware is activated. It is important to note that due to the inherent limitations of these older single-channel units, switching between the two channels of the DRECT module will not be possible. Users can configure the switch so that either channel one or channel two of the module becomes active when the slot is selected on the single-channel amplifier or preamp. The "Dual" setting is intended for use with units that have the necessary switching circuitry to access both modules simultaneously. When using a single-channel amplifier or preamp, setting the switch to "DUAL" will activate the bottom channel of the module. Conversely, setting the switch to "Single" will cause the top channel of the module to become active when selected.
