Description

The Gibson 1942 Banner J-45 Light Aged Vintage Sunburst is a meticulously crafted acoustic guitar inspired by the highly sought-after vintage J-45 models of the 1940s.  This guitar is built with a focus on replicating the structure and components of those classic instruments.  The body of the J-45 is constructed from mahogany for the back and sides, contributing to its warm and resonant tone.  The top is made from Thermally Aged Adirondack red spruce, which is hand-sprayed with a historic-style sunburst finish. This ageing process simulates the natural wear and tonal characteristics of a vintage instrument.

A key element in the construction of the 1942 Banner J-45 is the use of hot hide glue for the top bracing.  This traditional method, combined with the hand-scalloped X-bracing pattern using red spruce braces, is intended to enhance the guitar's tonal response and projection.  The neck, also mahogany, features a historic profile and a 24.75-inch scale length. The rosewood fingerboard has a 12-inch radius and is adorned with mother-of-pearl dot inlays.  The guitar has 19 frets using Legend Wire.

The nut and saddle are both made from bone, which is a traditional material known for its contribution to clear and sustained tone. The nut width is 1.724 inches.  The bridge is made of rosewood with a rectangular open slot design.  The tuning machines are strap-style open-back with aged cream buttons.  The guitar also features a tear drop tortoise pickguard with an aged appearance.  The finish is a Murphy Lab Light Aged nitrocellulose lacquer, applied by the skilled artisans at the Murphy Lab. This ageing process simulates decades of light play wear and gives the guitar the look and feel of a well-preserved vintage instrument. The hardware is also lightly aged to complement the finish.

The 1942 Banner J-45 comes with a period-correct case, a Gibson accessory kit, and a certificate of authenticity. The strings are .012, .016, .024, .032, .042, and .053 gauge.
