Authentic Sound & Nuances of a Vintage Echoplex EP-2 - Processes Stereo Inputs Independently - Comprehensive Control
The Strymon EC-1 Single Head dTape Echo pedal emulates the sound of a vintage '60s tape echo, including the valve preamp and mechanical imperfections that create its unique character. It offers two preamp voices, adjustable tape saturation and mechanics, and a Tape Age control to fine-tune the echo's tone. The EC-1 operates in stereo, features artifact-free tap tempo, MIDI control, and an expression pedal input. Its compact design and comprehensive controls make it a versatile tool for recreating classic tape echo sounds.

The Strymon EC-1 Single Head dTape Echo pedal offers a detailed recreation of the classic '60s tape echo sound, complete with the rich harmonics of a valve preamp. It captures the subtle mechanical imperfections that contribute to the organic modulation of vintage tape echoes, allowing users to dial in sounds ranging from warm slapback to expansive, feedback-laden echoes with a wide stereo image. The EC-1's design focusses on accurately reproducing the nuances of a meticulously-maintained Echoplex EP-2, including modifications made by technician Cesar Diaz. These modifications, which aimed to combine the best aspects of various Echoplex models, informed the EC-1's development, giving it a unique and nostalgic character.
The pedal features two selectable valve-modelled preamp voices, one based on the classic EP-2 and the other a modified version with a warmer response. Both offer an optional +6dB boost or can be bypassed. Strymon's dTape technology meticulously recreates the characteristics of vintage tape echo, including the moving head, tape condition, bias setting, and mechanical fluctuations. The Record Level switch provides three levels of tape saturation, from clean repeats to heavily saturated echoes. The Mechanics control adjusts the amount of wow, flutter, and other mechanical artifacts, while the Tape Age knob simulates the warmer tone of older tape. The Repeats control allows for lush echoes without runaway feedback, and the pedal accurately reproduces the pitch effects of a sliding record head.
The EC-1 operates in true stereo, with independent processing for left and right channels. It features artifact-free tap tempo, MIDI control, and an expression pedal input. The high-impedance, ultra-low noise Class A JFET stereo input preamp ensures exceptional touch sensitivity and dynamics. The pedal is built with premium components in a rugged enclosure and includes a USB jack for firmware updates and computer control. Its compact form factor houses a surprising amount of control and flexibility, making it a powerful tool for any guitarist seeking authentic tape echo tones.
