The PRS Private Stock 40th Anniversary McCarty Dragon is a limited-edition masterpiece celebrating PRS Guitars' 40-year legacy. Built on the iconic McCarty model, this guitar features PRS's McCarty III pickups for a warm, resonant tone, paired with a PRS stoptail bridge that maximises string vibration transfer. The striking dragon inlay, designed by fantasy artist Jeff Easley and crafted by Aulson Inlay, uses over 200 pieces of rare materials. Each detail, from the Private Stock Figured Maple top to the intricate fretboard and headstock inlays, highlights PRS's commitment to artistry and craftsmanship.
To celebrate 40 years of visionary design, PRS Guitars has unveiled the Private Stock 40th Anniversary McCarty Dragon - a model that embodies the essence of PRS's dedication to excellence, merging awe-inspiring aesthetics with unmatched playability and tone. This exclusive model pays homage to the rich legacy of PRS while showcasing an ambitious work of art in its intricate dragon inlay, crafted by Aulson Inlay and designed by renowned fantasy artist Jeff Easley.
Founder Paul Reed Smith was inspired by a teenage dream of a guitar with a dragon inlay - a vision first realised in 1992. This dream has now become part of PRS's storied history and resonates through each Dragon model produced. In the spirit of PRS innovation, the 40th Anniversary McCarty Dragon honours both the McCarty lineage and the original Dragon, bridging these two iconic designs in one stunning instrument. Paul Reed Smith shared, "For our 40th Anniversary, we chose a McCarty model as the foundation of the Dragon, which is only fitting considering the original 1992 Dragon was the beginning of what would become the McCarty model."
The McCarty model, first introduced in 1994, was PRS's inaugural 22-fret vintage-inspired guitar, combining a slightly thicker mahogany back and a stop-tail bridge with brass inserts and steel studs. The 40th Anniversary Dragon elevates this foundation with McCarty III pickups, producing a lush, vocal tone that's warm and clear, designed to capture each string's vibration through the instrument and deliver a resonant, musical sound.
The centrepiece of this model is its breathtaking dragon inlay. Designed by Jeff Easley, known for his Dungeons & Dragons illustrations, this dragon extends across the fretboard and truss rod cover, utilising over 200 pieces of inlay from a range of materials, including Blue Pacific Opal, Brown Scale Juma, and Gold, Black, White, and Brown Mother of Pearl. Jaime Aulson Myers, Co-Founder of Aulson Inlay, has been part of this endeavour since 2002, and her team brought Easley's design to life, celebrating the legacy of Larry Sifel and pushing the boundaries of craftsmanship.
Only 165 of these Private Stock 40th Anniversary McCarty Dragon models will be produced, making this not only a guitar but a limited-edition work of art.
