Celebrating Excellence: The Lowden 50th Anniversary Collection O-23 | Walnut - Red Cedar
Lowden Guitars, renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and innovative designs, is commemorating its 50th anniversary with a special limited edition collection.
The O-23 is part of Lowden's esteemed Original Series, a range that has remained true to its roots since its inception in 1976. Each model in this series, including the O-23, carries a two-number designation and features understated yet elegant aesthetic appointments. The seven-piece wood rosette, single piece binding, and three-piece purfling on the top, along with a rosewood front-head facing and an ebony fingerboard, reflect the classic Lowden aesthetic.
Shape and Design:The O model, also known as "The Original," was the first standard soundbox design created by George Lowden after extensive experimentation in 1976. This large-bodied guitar, second in size only to the Baritone in the Lowden range, is often compared to a Jumbo style guitar. However, its unique design and voice set it apart. The soundbox geometry and bracing are crafted to enhance treble response, balancing the natural bass-heavy characteristics of a large body to produce a beautifully balanced tone.
Tone Woods:
- Back and Sides: The O-23 features walnut for its back and sides. George Lowden has long favoured walnut for its clarity and definition across all body sizes, a sentiment unchanged since he first used it for an S prototype in 1991.
- Soundboard: The top is made from Red Cedar, a wood renowned for its warm, responsive tone, perfectly complementing the walnut back and sides.
Neck and Fingerboard:The neck of the O-23 is a 5-piece construction of mahogany and rosewood, offering stability and excellent tonal characteristics. The fingerboard is ebony, providing a smooth playing surface and luxurious feel. The GL standard neck profile, measuring 45mm at the nut and extending to 57mm at the 14th fret, ensures comfortable playability.
Additional Features:
- Binding and Purflings: The guitar features maple binding, with purflings crafted from maple, rocklite, and mahogany, adding a touch of elegance.
- Hardware: The O-23 is equipped with Gotoh 381 Gold tuners with ebony buttons, ensuring precise tuning and a premium aesthetic.
- Strings: Strung with Lowden Light Gauge 12-53 strings, the O-23 delivers a balanced, vibrant tone.
- Custom Options: This limited edition model includes the 50th Anniversary Inlay Package, adding a distinctive and commemorative touch to this exquisite instrument.
Limited Edition Brilliance

Reflecting on a Legacy
George Lowden's reflections on this milestone underscore the passion and dedication that have defined his career. "When I began making guitars under the Lowden name 50 years ago, I could have never imagined that my guitars would go on to be played by some of the best-loved guitarists across genres. I have been blessed to work with iconic musicians over the years to create guitars that inspire them to make music. From up-and-coming guitarists learning their first chords on Lowden guitars to seeing our instruments being played to sold-out audiences of record-breaking sizes, we owe all of Lowden’s success over the years to our players who have grown to be more than customers but inspirations, collaborators, supporters, and very much part of the Lowden family."
As one of only two UK retailers selected to offer this exclusive collection, Peach Guitars is proud to present the Lowden 50th Anniversary Collection O-23 | Walnut - Red Cedar. This guitar not only celebrates Lowden's remarkable 50-year journey but also represents a commitment to the future of guitar craftsmanship and innovation.
