Michael Landau has played on hundreds of albums since the early 1980s, with artists such as Joni Mitchell, Seal, Michael Jackson, James Taylor, B.B. King, Pink Floyd and Miles Davis to name just a few. An L.A. session ace and a players player, Landaus soulful, dynamic and endlessly creative playing has allowed him to remain in-demand across eras and genres, firmly establishing his legacy as an icon of the electric guitar. Throughout his career, Michaels constant companion, workhorse, canvas and muse has been a 1959 Stratocaster famously known as Coma. With its distinct colour, swapped out pickups and bridge it remains instantly recognisable to this day.
For 2023 our friends at Fender are extremely excited to announce the Stories collection Coma Stratocaster which pays beautifully represents the guitar as it exists today.
The Coma Strat begins with a rich and resonant 59 spec Alder body finished in a custom Coma Red satin nitrocellulose lacquer. This finish is extremely thin, allowing the body to vibrant and sustain much more efficiently when compared to other finish types. The body is beautifully decorated with a tortoise shell pickguard and mismatched plastics, it even includes the iconic Coma transfer in the case.
With a bolt-on Maple neck this Strat offers up all the classic spank youd expect. Its super snappy and responsive, exactly what Landau requires from his instruments. The satin nitrocellulose finish and custom C profile allow for quick and easy movements right across the neck. It also includes a period correct slab Rosewood fingerboard ordained with a 7.25 radius, pearloid inlays and a 42mm nut width.
One of the defining features of this model is the brand new Custom ML pickups! With a pair of ML Ultra Noisless single coils and a ML CuNiFe Wide-Range humbucker you can achieve an extremely wide range of tones. Hardware includes a 6-screw vintage-style Stratocaster tremolo with a cold-rolled steel block and Fender ClassicGear tuning machines. The Michael Landau Coma Stratocaster wears its rich history on full display, truly representing a vital artist thats always in transition.
