For this limited 60-piece Masterbuilt run, the Custom Shops very own Todd Krause has carefully disassembled the original guitar in order to note and measure every detail, curve and scratch - and there are plenty of scratches, thanks to Landau’s exuberant style!

Michael Landau has played on hundreds of albums since the early 1980s, with artists such as Joni Mitchell, Seal, Michael Jackson, James Taylor, B.B. King, Pink Floyd and Miles Davis to name just a few. An L.A. session ace and a players player, Landaus soulful, dynamic and endlessly creative playing has allowed him to remain in-demand across eras and genres, firmly establishing his legacy as an icon of the electric guitar. Throughout his career, Michaels constant companion, workhorse, canvas and muse has been a 1959 Stratocaster famously known as Coma. With its distinct colour, swapped out pickups and bridge it remains instantly recognisable to this day.

The Coma Strat begins with a rich and resonant 59 spec 2-piece Alder body finished in a custom Coma Red satin nitrocellulose lacquer. This finish is extremely thin, allowing the body to vibrant and sustain much more efficiently when compared to other finish types. The body has been painstakingly relic’d by Krause and highlights COMA’s body wear from years of use and every scar from previous modifications, it even features Michaels’s hand-drawn “COMA” on the body in permanent marker just as he had done years ago
With a bolt-on Maple neck this Strat offers up all the classic spank you’d expect. Its super snappy and responsive, exactly what Landau requires from his instruments. The Maple neck features a ‘60s oval “C” neck shape which allows for quick and easy movements right across the neck. It also includes a Flat-Laminated Rosewood fingerboard ordained with a 7.25 radius, pearloid inlays, 21 narrow tall and a 42mm nut width.
One of the defining features of this model is the brand new Custom ML pickups! With a pair of ML Ultra Noisless single coils and a ML CuNiFe Wide-Range humbucker you can achieve an extremely wide range of tones. Hardware includes a 6-screw vintage-style Stratocaster tremolo with a cold-rolled steel block and Fender Classic Gear tuning machines. The Michael Landau Coma Stratocaster wears its rich history on full display, truly representing a vital artist that’s always in transition.
