Now this is something that you don't get to see every day. How incredibly cool is this? This is the full-fat, Japanese Custom Shop ESP version of the James Hetfield Iron Cross - normally seen in the LTD version. We love the standard version of this guitar but this instrument is based on James' personal spec and has quite different features.
Handmade one at a time in Japan, the wood selection and attention to detail on the ESP Iron Cross is second-to-none. The neck on this model is tailored to James' preference of 12" whereas the LTD version is 13.7". A lot of LTD guitars are 13.7" to keep the modern shredder happy but the Custom Shop have made this 12" to match James' spec - and that of a Gibson Les Paul. The neck is also one single piece of mahogany as opposed to the three of the LTD version.
The hardware on this beauty also gets an upgrade. The nut is bone as opposed to moulded plastic and the machine heads are Sperzel as opposed to LTD's own brand. Sperzel tuners are truly made in the USA - the parts, assembly and finishing is all done in the States and has been since the company started in 1977. The guitar also comes with ESP straplocks - another upgrade over the standard model - along with Elixir strings as opposed to D'Addario for a longer life.
The pickups are James' signature set. After using 81/60s for a long time, he decided to take those pickups and supercharge them sonically and visually. Whilst both are active ceramic pickups, the internal construction is different and this set has more headroom, are more open sounding, have a more organic roll-off and a fatter sounding bridge pickup.
As guitarists or collectors, we often buy another model simply because we love the way it looks. One of our favourite upgrades on this model is the fact the fingerboard is genuine Gabon Ebony and therefore jet black. The standard LTD model uses Macassar Ebony which can be noticeable lighter in appearance. To set it off, the inlay work is genuine Mother Of Pearl as opposed to plastic pearloid. This makes a huge difference to the beauty and class of the aesthetics.
Topped off with an ESP hard case and Certificate of Authenticity, this is a guitar that will bring much pleasure to the owner and those who get to see it when the new custodian shows it off!
