The Z-80s story begins way back in 2017 when long time Dr.Z artist and legendary guitarist, Brad Paisley purchased an extremely rare and sort after amplifier, a Vox AC80! The AC80 is one of most powerful amplifiers every designed by Vox and was created originally for The Beatles to use on their US Stadium tours in the mid 1960s. Only around 300 of these illusive amplifiers were ever officially produced, making them a real jewel in Vox’s back catalogue. Whilst touring through Cleveland Paisley invited Dr.Z over to check out and play through the amp himself. After hours of tone chasing Paisley presented Dr.Z with one special challenge. “Can you build me another one, Z?” It was at that point that Dr.Z got to work!

The Dr.Z Z-80 embraces the rich heritage of the legendary AC80 but brings it right into the modern age! As the name would suggest this head produces 80-watts of pure valve tone! Powered by 4x individually cathode biased EL34 Power amp tubes and 2x 12AX7 & 1x 12AU7 Preamp valves this amp is mean and ready for even the largest of stages! With a Volume, Treble, Middle, Bass and Master Volume control you can really sculpt this amplifier to taste! There’s so many tonal possibilities within this amp!
The uncanny magic of the original Vox design was also it’s Achilles’ heel. The AC80 contains 4 EL34 power tubes, each pushed to the brink of meltdown in order to achieve 80+ watts from the output section. Dr.Z has addressed this common issue by sourcing a stouter power transformer custom-spec’ed from Heyboer Transformers as well as reining the cathode values in, which in turn relived the punishing voltages experienced by the EL34.
Dr.Z has never been satisfied with just copying another design, he always aims to improve vintage designs and bring them right into the modern day, with the Z-80 he has certainly done that! With improved reliability, refinement of the circuitry, a post-phase inverter Master Volume control and built in FX loop this amp is now extremely versatile and can lend it skills to just about any genre.
Hand produced by Dr.Z himself in Cleveland the Z-80 is poised and ready to take you on a musical journey unlike anything you have experienced before.
