The half-brother of the DOD Carcosa, the Chthonic is the psychotic dizygotic dark companion - built off of a beloved 70's inspired fuzz circuit with added tone (Lustre) and gain (Fuzz) controls. Introducing the DOD Chthonic Fuzz, a powerhouse pedal designed to deliver rich, thick, and versatile fuzz tones that pair exceptionally well with single-coil, P90, gold-foil, and DeArmond style pickups. While it also complements PAF-style humbuckers, the Chthonic Fuzz stands out with its focus on brighter guitars and clean amplifiers.
Built on a beloved single-knob 70's fuzz circuit, the Chthonic Fuzz incorporates innovative features for a unique sonic experience. The addition of a subtle tone control, known as Lustre, allows users to dial down high frequencies post-distortion, while a separate gain control (Fuzz) provides a straightforward means of shaping the intensity. The result is a straightforward yet powerful fuzz with an earthy, dark flavour. Utilising transistor clipping with a pair of 2N2222 transistors, the Chthonic Fuzz offers guitar volume knob clean-up akin to classic fuzzes but with a distinctive twist, making it a classic fuzz from a different dimension.
The pedal's captivating Kraken/Cthulhu graphics, crafted by the same artist as the Carcosa Fuzz, give it a distinct personality. Serving as a dark companion to the Carcosa Fuzz, the Chthonic takes its place in the underworld, promising a sonic journey that's both powerful and unique.
For optimal performance, place the DOD Chthonic Fuzz at the beginning of your signal chain. This setup enables seamless interaction with guitar pickups and volume control. Adjusting the guitar volume slightly yields optimal results, with a roll-back to 7 or 8 providing a smooth transition to a pleasing overdrive. Dialing the volume back to 5 produces sparkling clean tones. It's worth noting that the Chthonic Fuzz responds to cable length and capacitance, so keeping the input cable short is advised. Additionally, avoid placing any pedals before the Chthonic to maintain the pedal's unique tone integrity, as a buffer before it may alter the overall sound.
