Boss SDE-3000EVH | Eddie Van Halen Dual Digital Delay
The EVH and BOSS SDE-3000EVH Dual Digital Delay is a powerful and versatile pedal that authentically reproduces Eddie Van Halen's iconic delay sound. It combines the vintage charm of the original SDE-3000 with modern enhancements, extensive connectivity, and flexible control options, making it a must-have for guitarists seeking to capture and innovate with Eddie's legendary tone. Please read on below for more info on this exciting tribute.
EVH and BOSS have collaborated to create the SDE-3000EVH Dual Digital Delay, a meticulous recreation of the stereo delays central to Eddie Van Halen's renowned three-cabinet live stage guitar sound. Inspired by the vintage Roland SDE-3000 rackmount delay, this powerful pedal integrates two fully featured SDE-3000 units, extensive connectivity, and eight EVH-curated presets that replicate Eddie's actual delay settings. This allows guitarists to achieve the expansive spatial delay tone synonymous with Eddie Van Halen.
The SDE-3000EVH, developed jointly by EVH and BOSS, is based on the legendary Roland SDE-3000 digital delay from the 1980s. It includes eight locked EVH presets with output level adjustments, versatile connectivity for creating an EVH wet/dry/wet rig, and integration with various mono and stereo setups. The pedal features a classic appearance with the signature EVH logo and stripes, maintaining the vintage digital delay sound while offering extended features for modern rigs. It includes two full-featured delays, each with independent parameters, mono/stereo modulation, and panning, and offers adjustable delay times with two range settings: 0-1500 ms and 0-3000 ms.
Eddie Van Halen’s original SDE-3000 units were crucial in achieving his unique wet/dry/wet live rig sound. These delays provided rich, high-quality tone and specific parameters that allowed Eddie to tweak the sound to his exact preferences. Despite experimenting with other delay products, Eddie always returned to the SDE-3000s, which remained core components of his stage rig throughout his career. This new collaboration aims to bring Eddie's distinctive delay approach to guitarists worldwide, allowing them to explore and innovate with the same tools.
The SDE-3000EVH combines two SDE-3000 delays in one pedal, offering the ability to recreate Eddie's wet/dry/wet setup easily. This setup uses a dry path from a central amplifier and left and right cabinets amplified with wet-only delay effects, creating a wide, multi-dimensional soundstage. The pedal includes eight EVH presets accessible via a dedicated panel switch, with the first four presets designed for a wet/dry/wet setup and the next four adapted for a standard stereo amplifier setup.
The SDE-3000EVH captures the warm, inviting sound of the original SDE-3000, which stood out in the 1980s for its beautiful tone and musicality. BOSS has meticulously analysed the original's internal digital processing and analog circuitry to recreate its unique characteristics, including variable frequency response, magnetic saturation, and evolving modulation. This modern pedal retains these authentic details while adding enhancements like 92 user memories and adjustable noise suppression.
Each delay in the SDE-3000EVH features independent parameters and mono or stereo modulation. Users can run the delays in parallel for stereo effects or in series for complex rhythms and reverb-like depth. The pedal’s flexible I/O supports various mono and stereo setups, and an external loop allows for the integration of external pedals or an amplifier’s effects loop with selectable impedance for optimal tone.
The SDE-3000EVH offers expanded control options with three onboard footswitches for memory selection, tap tempo, delay hold, and more. Additional control jacks support up to four footswitches, two expression pedals, or a GA-FC/GA-FC EX for external operation. TRS MIDI I/O is included, providing a range of assignable targets for deep real-time control beyond the original SDE-3000’s capabilities.
