Universal Audio has officially introduced the Enigmatic '82 Overdrive Special Amp Pedal, a groundbreaking amp emulation pedal that captures the mythical tones of the legendary Overdrive Special valve amplifiers. Known for producing some of the most exclusive and sought-after tones in guitar history, this pedal brings the sound of amps cherished by players like John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Joe Bonamassa, and Carlos Santana directly to you.
Built on UAFX dual-engine processing and world-class UAD modelling, the Enigmatic '82 meticulously replicates the nuances of Overdrive Special amps spanning three decades, from the original 1970s models crafted in Santa Cruz to the 1980s and 1990s iterations from Los Angeles. This pedal offers guitarists access to a variety of tonal options that have defined the Overdrive Special's iconic sound, including FET preamp voicings, HRM overdrive mods, and the rare Skyliner tone stack from the late '80s.
James Santiago, Senior Product Designer at Universal Audio, shared the significance of this product: "With original Overdrive Specials, there was constant innovation in every amp. Each tweak revolved around the player's touch and desire for tones that made their style musically speak. With the Enigmatic '82, we're giving players of all genres the evolving magic that made these amps so legendary, with more customisation than we've ever put in a UAFX pedal."
Alongside Jazz and Rock modes that offer pristine cleans and rich overdrive, the pedal also features a Custom mode. Here, players can use the UAFX mobile app to dive deep into the amp's settings, from preamp adjustments to output valve bias, and even mix and match amp modifications to craft their unique, personal sound.
Additionally, Universal Audio's Dynamic Speaker Modelling, derived from the award-winning OX Amp Top Box, offers nine classic mic and speaker pairings, including the '70s Santa Cruz, late-'80s Skyliner, and '90s Hot Rubber Monkey (HRM) preamp mods. The pedal also comes with six bonus cabinet models, providing guitarists with unparalleled flexibility in finding their perfect tone.
Key Specifications of the Enigmatic '82 include:
- Power requirements: 9VDC, centre-negative, 400 mA (sold separately)
- Inputs/Outputs: 2 x 1/4" TS for stereo connections and 4-cable mode
- USB Type-C port for updates
For further customisation, the UAFX mobile app allows players to fine-tune hidden amp tweaks, EQs, and mods from original Overdrive Special amplifiers. Guitarists can also explore artist presets from world-class musicians, making it easier than ever to achieve those iconic tones.
With this combination of vintage authenticity, modern technology, and deep customisation options, the Enigmatic '82 Overdrive Special Amp Pedal stands as a tribute to one of the most coveted amps in history, while also offering endless opportunities for creative sound exploration. Built with UA's renowned craftsmanship, the Enigmatic '82 promises to deliver a lifetime of legendary tone.
