Here's a few words from Paul about the design and build process of the Charcoal Phoenix - When we released the Private Stock John McLaughlin Limited Edition in 2023, I was inspired by its exceptional sound and playability. For the Charcoal Phoenix, I wanted to create something equally remarkable but with a stoptail bridge. Using chaltecoco for the neck and ziricote for the fingerboard, I achieved an instrument that sustains beautifully and rings with clarity. The deep crimson back and the charcoal microburst top inspired the name Charcoal Phoenix, evoking the imagery of a phoenix rising from fire and ashes.
The Charcoal Phoenix begins with a Private Stock grade Figured Maple top. Thats right, these awesome guitars will all feature timber hand-selected from the Private Stock vault. The natural beauty of the wood is just astonishing, and this is only further enhanced by the stunning Charcoal Phoenix stain. The back of the guitar is just as eye catching and features a deep Crimson stain on a Fat Back Mahogany body.
One of the most unique features of this guitar is the Chaltecoco Pattern neck. This rare tonewood delivers incredible sustain and is a great partner to the body woods. The Ziricote fingerboard offers some beautiful figuring and features Rippled Abalone Old-School Bird inlays. It also features a 10 radius, 22 frets, and a 25 scale length. The headstock also features a stunning Pre-Factory Eagle inlay crafted from Rippled Abalone.
The Charcoal Phoenix also features the newly updated PRS TCI pickups for 2025 and EQ mini-toggle switches. The TCI pickups are crafted with American Alnico magnets and slightly modified winding, wiring, and electronics specifications. These pickups have a clear, beautiful tone based on Pauls experience playing this guitar live and in the studio for more than a year. The EQ mini-toggles act as tuned high-pass filters when engaged, removing shelved low- end and allowing the high frequencies through for more clarity and musical highs.
With high quality hardware across the board, these guitars deliver a truly premium playing experience. It features a PRS Stoptail bridge with brass inserts and steel studs, all of which really help with the guitars sustain. The Phase III non-locking tuners also help for incredible stability.
Introduced on Paul Reed Smiths birthday, the PRS Charcoal Phoenix Limited Edition is part of PRS Guitars 40th Anniversary celebration. Only 150 of these instruments will be available. Hand-signed 40th Anniversary certificate included.
