Since their debut at winter NAMM in ’85, PRS guitars quickly established themselves as one one of the biggest guitar brands on the planet with Paul Reed Smith himself widely regarded as one of the industries biggest innovators, a true visionary. His commitment to improvement and refinement paired up with his design abilities propelled PRS right to the very top of the food chain. With models like the Custom 24, McCarty 594 and the Special Semi-Hollow there really is a Paul Reed Smith guitar for everyone!

PRS might just have one of the most complete product libraries available right now! With Their “Core” range offering the fully fledged American built experience…right down to the truly incredible Indonesian built SE models, which offer incredible value for money! But we hear what you’re saying…”I want something limited and bespoke!” Well…That’s where the Wood Library program comes in!

The Wood Library program may just be one of PRS’s best keep secrets. Deep inside PRS’s Maryland factory sits a row of racks filled with some of the world’s most extraordinary and unique timbers, each patiently waiting their turn to be crafted into a special run “Wood Library” instrument.

But what does that actually mean? Well…The Wood Library program is in many ways similar to PRS’s legendary “Private Stock” program, allowing for unprecedented customisation of some of PRS’s most iconic Core line models! Want a Custom 24 with a Flame Maple neck, Ebony fingerboard and Alder body…No problem! But what makes the Wood Library so unique is that it is designed to give dealers the opportunity to build exclusive runs for their store and clientele, that way these awesome creations can be experienced by a much wider audience. How sweet is that!

Over the years we’ve been lucky enough to receive some of the finest PRS Wood Library models money could buy, let’s take a look back at some of our favourites!

The McCarty 594 may just be Paul Reed Smith’s golden child, with it’s stylish visuals and classy nature it’s no wonder why it’s such a fan favourite. With this particular Wood Library example PRS have turned that sacred formula all the way up to 11 and spawned a true work of art! The figured Maple top has been painstakingly stained with a rich and vibrant satin Yellow Tiger finish which really helps to accentuate the deep body curves and show off the Maple’s natural beauty. With a Swamp Ash body this McCarty 594 boasts an extremely unique tonal palette, it’s extremely resonant and features a slightly scooped midrange, it's perfect for cutting through in a live mix. There really is something special about fade finished PRS guitars! We rarely see this design style anymore so any opportunity we get to spec out some killer Wood Library models is always taken. With a visually striking Green & Red fade finish these model perfectly captures the magic of the Wood Library program! Paired up with a satin Flame Maple neck adorned with Black Corian and Green ripple details this guitar is something else! A few years back we took part in a limited European Wood Library run comprised of some seriously awesome McCarty 594 models, each featuring a stunning carved 1-piece Quilted Maple 10 top on a lightweight yet resonant Mahogany body. Thanks to PRS’s iconic “Faded Whale Blue Smokeburst” stain this beauty was both visually and sonically beautiful! They certainly proved popular 

It’s certainly a difficult decision to come to but we think this Custom 24 Wood Library run may just be our favourite! What initially started as a stock Custom 24 quickly evolved into a whole different kind of animal! A rich and resonant Mahogany body is topped with highly figured maple 10 tops, available in “Fire Red to Grey Black Fade”, “Tri-Colour Burst”, “River Blue” and “copperhead Burst” they most certainly looked and sounded the part! But the fun didn’t stop there…These models were also spec’d out with Roasted Flame Maple necks and Ziricote fingerboards for extra tonal goodness!

For those people who crave a unique wood combination or something a little different to a stock model then the Wood Library is the place to look, it features all the magic and mojo of the illusive Private Stock but with a more accessible price point.
