Back in the '50s and '60s Magnatone Electronics were a really key player in the development of vibrato loaded tube amps, finding favour with players such as Lonnie Mack and Neil Young, they were a prominent amp manufacturer up to the mid-1970s. With the help of ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons, Magnatone was revived in 2013 with a range of vintage inspired tone machines!
One of the standout models is the Varsity Reverb, debuting at NAMM 2017, the Varsity Reverb is designed to offer a classic, all-American tone with rich harmonics and super touch sensitivity. It's the ultimate studio amp but more than holds its own on stage and is an option often utilised by mega player Jeff Beck.
The Varsity Reverb is a push-pull 15-watt amplifier powered by two EL84 power tubes while the dual 12AX7s in the preamp provide a classic American tone. Combined with tube-driven full length Accutronics spring reverb, the Varsity Reverb delivers a sound much bigger than the power rating.
With the traditional Magnatone vintage brown and gold cosmetics and custom Magnatone 12" speaker, this popular tube amplifier is bright and lively, full of colour and harmonics.
