Margo Price is a fearless singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose raw storytelling and genre-blending sound embody the rebellious spirit of rock and country. A true artists artist, shes built a career on authenticity, passion, and a relentless dedication to her craft. But one constant throughout her musical journey has been her mid-1960s J-45 Now, the Gibson Custom Margo Price J-45 honours Prices connection to the J-45 with a beautiful new signature instrument.
First introduced in 1942, the Gibson J-45 has remained a mainstay Gibson acoustic model. It has earned its name as The Workhorse due to its wide acceptance, no-nonsense simplicity, and understated elegance. Its one of the most recorded acoustic guitars in history and Gibsons best-selling acoustic model of all time. The all-new Margo Price J-45 builds on this rich history, and features a unique touches that make it extra special.
The Gibson Margo Price J-45 is inspired by Margos original mid-60s J-45 which has been by her side throughout her career. Its an instrument that has brought her so much joy and inspiration over the years, so it was a natural starting point for designing a signature instrument. It features a slightly thinner Mahogany body paired up with a Red Spruce top, this traditional tone wood pairing is further enhanced by hand-scalloped advanced X-bracing, which gives this guitar its signature thump, power, and volume. The slightly thinner body design gives this guitar a somewhat tighter bass response that sits perfectly in the mix while also making it a bit easier and more comfortable to hold. Red spruce is known for its loud, clear, and sweet tone and was traditionally used for some of the most coveted vintage acoustic guitar models during the first half of the 20th century. Due to rarity and scarcity, it has been less commonly used since then, so its appearance on the Margo Price J-45 is notable.
This special J-45 features a few unique visual touches that make it standout when compared to other acoustic guitars. The nitrocellulose Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish is super rich and vibrant. The colour is just incredible and really does look great. One of this guitars most unique features are the double 50s style pickguards, which both feature a unique, custom designed red-tail hawk graphic.
As Margo says, -Red-tailed hawks have always been symbolistic to me. I see them everywhere, and I always have, as they are common all over the United States, but to me, they are otherworldly, and they always come to me in my time of need with messages of strength and perseverance. Red, as a colour, relates to love, passion, and even anger, matters that we typically would associate with the heart, but if you look closely, the ends of the feathers are dipped in white, and the bird itself has a spiritual nature to them. When Im on long road trips, I look out the window and count them alongside the highway. They pass over me at the most kismet times, reminding me to find strength in my vulnerability and to open up and connect to those around me. I hope this guitar will remind those who play it these lessons as well.
The Mahogany neck is extremely comfortable thanks to its ergonomically designed Round neck profile, which fills your hand and allows for quick, easy movements. The Indian Rosewood fingerboard features traditional Mother-of-pearl dot inlays, 20 frets, a 1.725 nut width, and a 24.75 scale length.
The Margo Price J-45 also comes equipped with high quality hardware across the board, like a Reverse Belly Rosewood bridge, Grover tuners, and of course, L.R. Baggs electronics, so its studio and stage-ready right out of the included hardshell case.
