Fulltone Custom Shop OCD-Germanium | Overdrive/Distortion
Custom Paint & Germanium Diode Clipping
The Fulltone OCD is an extremely open sounding overdrive and distortion circuit that differs from other overdrives in that it has a good bit more dynamic range, meaning the difference between picking soft or hard will yield a natural and wide range of distortion, with less compression than traditional diode-clipped overdrives. The OCD creates complex overtones without changing the inherent tone of the guitar and amp you're playing through. The OCD uses an unusual combination of overdriving its JFET opamp and additionally using hard-clipping via a pair of MOSFETs to voltage reference. This method is something that didn't exist in a pedal prior to the OCD. The Custom Shop OCD-Ge has some exciting differences from other OCD versions. Read on below...
On this particular Custom Shop version of the OCD, a pair of Germanium diodes are used in conjunction with the pair of MOSFETs. This widens the clipping threshold and takes on the soft-knee clipping characteristics of the Germanium diodes, giving a valve feel and enhancing the octave-up overtones. The softer character of the Germanium diodes also allowed Michael Full to tweak some values to let through more highs, resulting in more clarity without harshness when the tone is turned up.
The earliest OCDs had an audio taper volume pot which has been applied on this version also. Because this version is louder than the standard OCD, the audio taper allos you to find the correct volume without having to be super-careful around the lower third of the volume pot.
The earliest OCDs used 2 x Mosfets plus 1 x Germanium diode, but very quickly these diodes became harder and harder to find, and they became expensive.
Original OCDs used two MOSFETS plus one Germanium diode but they became harder and harder to find and they became expensive. In more recent times Michael stumbled across a reasonably large stash of the right kind of Germanium diodes and bought all of them to make this ultimate Custom Shop OCD. It also looks beautiful in Metallic Teal with a chrome undercoat, morphing between blues and greens depending on the light and angle.
Great definition, more valve-like feel, a slightly wider dynamic range, more sustain, and a more focused single-note tones. And as with all Fulltone pedals... 100% built in the USA.
