The EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold is a straightforward distortion device designed to replicate the sound characteristics of a fully cranked vintage Model T amplifier. This pedal offers the open sound, clarity, and crunch typically associated with a dimed valve amplifier, but in a significantly smaller format and without the associated high maintenance expenses.
The design philosophy behind the Acapulco Gold prioritises simplicity, recognising that a player's technique and guitar controls are fundamental to shaping their tone. Consequently, the pedal features only two controls: a footswitch for engaging and disengaging the effect, and a large knob that governs the output volume. All other tonal shaping is intended to be achieved through adjustments to the player's guitar. Reducing the guitar's volume will decrease the amount of gain, while manipulating the guitar's tone control will result in a darker rhythm sound.
The single large knob on the Acapulco Gold controls the overall output level of the pedal. Users are advised to exercise caution when adjusting this knob, as the Acapulco Gold is capable of producing a very high output volume.
When a guitar's volume is set to its maximum, the Acapulco Gold produces a powerful, roaring distortion reminiscent of a fully driven Model T amplifier pushed to its limits. Slightly reducing the guitar's volume transforms the pedal's character into a raunchy overdrive. Further decreasing the guitar's volume to its minimum settings yields a more subtle, hazy tone with a Nashville-style twang.
For guitars equipped with individual volume and tone controls for each pickup, along with a three-way selector switch, the Acapulco Gold offers increased versatility. By manipulating these controls, the single-knob pedal can effectively function as a three-channel tone device, providing a range of distinct sounds accessible through simple adjustments on the guitar itself. The pedal is touch-sensitive and exhibits a strong responsiveness to changes in the guitar's volume and tone knobs.
