At the heart of the Octal Six are a pair of octal preamp tubes, the 6SL7 and 6SN7. These tubes, typically used in power applications, bring a distinct character to the amp's sound. The octal tubes have a larger, 8-pin base, setting them apart from the more common 9-pin 12AX7 tubes found in most amps. The independent DC heater supply for the tubes ensures low-noise operation, making the amp incredibly quiet even at high gain settings. The sound signature is harmonically rich, with smooth compression and a classic overdrive that recalls the tone of 1950s Tweed amps, but with better clarity and articulation.
For power, the Octal Six uses the 7591 power tube, a less common but highly regarded tube from the final days of the vacuum tube era.
