New Release | Magnatone SL-100 Slash Signature Amp!
This industry always manages to keep us on our toes, and one of the more surprising developments of 2023 was the recent union of enigmatic Les Paul slingin, Sweet Child O’ Mine, Slash and the collective genius of the legendary Magnatone brand.
For years we’ve all associated Slash with Marshall, especially his 2 signatures, the Marshall JCM 2555 and the AFD100. And it’s important to note that this new collaboration does not spell the end of their relationship, Slash is simply using the Magnatone to bring a slightly different flavour to his creative table!
After a couple of weeks of speculation and rumour, it’s officially here, the BRAND NEW Magnatone SL-100 Slash Signature. A 100 watt, all valve head developed in conjunction with Slash. During the GnR ‘23 World Tour, Slash added a Magnatone Super Fifty-Nine M-80 to his rig, it captured his attention in a big way and the SL-100 is a supercharged design based on that very amp but with more tone and gain!
Based on a 100 watt British type circuit, a quartet of EL-34 tubes deliver headroom, clarity and the grind that Slash is known for live and in the studio. The SL-100 pre-amp uses four 12AX7/ECC83 tubes that offer two distinct gain modes enabling the player to select between LO and HI gain settings. Modes are accessed via the included footswitch as well as directly on the front control panel.
The LO gain mode is voiced like a vintage Super Lead from the 1960’s with the lows fortified slightly and the icepick highs tamed for today’s music. Using a guitar with humbucker pickups and fully cranked, the low gain control will yield a medium crunch that is quite satisfying in depth and tonal quality. Rolling off the volume knob on your guitar allows you to easily clean up your tone, expanding dynamic range and flexibility.
The HI gain mode is designed with a cascaded gain preamp style reminiscent of the 1980’s modded design that has been finely tuned to optimise the sound for Slash’s humbucker guitars. Adjusting the treble control allows the highs to be boosted for guitar pick clarity without being overly harsh. The tone stack has been designed to clean up nicely when rolling back on the volume control on your guitar adding harmonics and range not before found in a Magnatone amp.
The Slash 4x12 speaker cabinet is loaded with four Celestion Vintage 30 speakers, Slash’s personal speaker of choice. These speakers deliver a warm tone, smooth breakup and biting upper mid’s that are hallmarks of the Celestion speaker sound.
