New Release | Gibson Kirk Hammett Greeny Les Paul Standard
There are very few guitars that can be considered as important or iconic as the people that played them, Clapton’s Blackie, Jimi’s Izabella, David Gilmour’s Black Strat and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Number One are the obvious options, but there is one that arguably outranks them all…..
Greeny.
Yep, a guitar whose history is the stuff of legend, the holy grail. I’m sure we all know the story, but humour me here, we’re going to recap!
Originally owned by the legendary Peter Green, Greeny, a ‘59 Les Paul, made its debut with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers on the seminal 1967 album “A Hard Road”. The album was a huge success and brought into focus the talismanic skills of Peter Green, who along with bass player John McVie, would depart the Bluesbreakers to form Fleetwood Mac.
“Oh Well”, “Black Magic Woman”, “Albatross”, the Greeny and Peter Green duo delivered some of the greatest moments of blues rock history while with Fleetwood Mac. In 1970 however, Peter Green sold the guitar to a young up and comer by the name of Gary Moore.
With Moore, Greeny would become an important feature of both Thin Lizzy and Moore’s solo work, most notably on “Parisienne Walkways”, a classic you can still hear being murdered in guitar shops across the country! Unfortunately, Gary Moore ran into financial difficulties around 2006 and Greeny’s days were spent in several private collections, that is until 2014, when Metallica’s Kirk Hammett was offered the opportunity to purchase it, and of course he did!
Which brings us to today, and 2023. There have been numerous recreations of Greeny over the years, usually they are astronomically expensive and elusive, but not anymore!
Introducing the Gibson Kirk Hammett “Greeny” Les Paul Standard, a fitting and attainable tribute to a legend.
With a Mahogany body and AAA Figured Maple top, finished in Greeny Burst, Greeny looks every bit the classic ‘59. The colouring and quality of the top really pop and you can’t take your eyes off it!
The neck is crafted from Mahogany and features an Indian Rosewood board, 22 frets and a ‘50s Vintage profile. It’s super comfortable and well balanced, I dare you not to burst into a Fleetwood Mac or Thin Lizzy riff when you pick one up!
Greeny’s tonal dominance all stemmed from reverse mounted neck pickups. Peter Green was looking to emulate Eric Clapton’s tone and removed the neck pickup only to put it back in back to front! This resulted in a super sweet out-of-phase tone that pretty much everybody has tried to replicate. The Gibson Greenybuckers, with Reversed Magnetic Polarity and Reverse Mounted at the neck, truly do capture that incredible sound.
You’re going to see a lot of this guitar in the coming months, it’s going to be everywhere, but the only place you need to come for info and videos is right here! So keep your eyes peeled!
