This Dale Wilson Masterbuilt was one of the coolest guitars we laid our eyes on at NAMM 2018. Dale Wilson is known the world over as one of Fenders highly revered Masterbuilders, a select group of some of the worlds most esteemed luthiers, with so much interest in this guitar we were super pleased when we found out it would be heading our way!
The Fender Custom Shop '61 Heavy Relic Strat is a great example of the legendary prowess of the Masterbuilders. With a traditional Alder body, this stunner benefits from a heavily aged Firemist Silver over 3-Colour Sunburst finish. Traditionally, finish over finish paint jobs would be a fresh block colour over Sunburst, the origins of this process are still a little unclear but one suggestion is that since Sunburst was a standard colour, all production guitars would be finished in this colour and simply painted over if a customer requested a custom colour finish. The other suggestion is that solid block colour was applied to cover flawed or damaged sunburst finishes. It looks incredible and has been painstakingly aged to give a truly authentic look.
A grade AAA Flame Maple neck rocks a 9.5' radius, 6105 frets, and a '65 Strat C neck profile, it's beautiful, comfortable and super smooth. The AAA Rosewood fingerboard is a treat to play, perfectly balanced and with flawless playability right up the neck, it's a real player's piece.
A trio of Custom Shop hand-wound Fat '60s pickups deliver all the classic Strat spank you need. With a real vintage flavour and crisp note definition, these singlecoils are the real deal and were hand-wound by Fender pickup master Josefina Campos. Josefina was apprentice to Fender legend Abigail Ybarra and knows all the secrets to unlock the tonal potential of any guitar.
The quality is so apparent from the very first glance, it's easy to see why Dale Wilson holds his place amongst the world's very finest luthiers.
